Warrior's Way 1 - ResultsAsh wins the Victorian WMC belt

F1 - 68kg
Joel Octigan (Hammer's) vs Eddie Baldacchino (Ult Hoppers)
Joel dominated this fight throughout, winning in the 3R from punches, after an 8 count which Eddie never really recovered from. I think Joel won it with 6 seconds to spare? I reckon we'll be seeing a lot more of Joel, after seeing him at JWP seminars and interclubs, its good to finally see him in front of a big crowd on a big show.

F2 - 63kg
Eric Misckle (Young Bulls) vs Karl Paredes (Sor.Jaiphet)
Having seen Eric fight a few times recently I knew this would be an entertaining fight, but I wasn't sure if the big head kick that he had attempted a few times would get through as devastating as it did. I was relieved when Karl got up but it always worries me when a fighter goes down like that.

F3 - 68kg
Chris Young (Colonel's) vs Ben Herezo (Cobram)
This fight was a bit of a war, with some really big shots being thrown. Both guys seemed to take turns to dominate the fight, with the fight going the distance and the resulting split points decision to Chris showing the complexity of the scoring.

F4 - 63kg
David Bachsinar (Hammer's) vs Tony Olin (Sor.Jaiphet)
This entertaining fight had all the elements of a great fight, big lead-up, emotional exchanges, some crisp techniques, decisive takedowns and a lot of heart. David looked good from the start, living up to the hype, winning by KO in the third round after an earlier 8 count.

Sharbell wins his come-back fight

F5 - 78kg
Sharbell Sukkar (Hangar 4) vs Daniel Ellis (Cobram)
Sharbell returned to the ring after a few year absense and used his calm collected fight style to nullify Daniel, who has looked very impressive on the country shows up north recently. Daniel did not really fire up and didn't get to really use his pressure fighting style either, Sharbs winning UPD.

F6 - 81kg FTR
Daniel Way (Numurkah) vs Trevor Loomes (DMDs)
This fight was a well balanced match, and its been a match that should have happened years ago and will now have to happen again because it ended in a draw after 3 inconclusive rounds. Daniel put the pressure on multiple times but Trevor was very evasive and also had some slick counters, Trevor looking much better than his recent encounters, and Grasshopper never failing to impress.

F7 - 69kg FTR
Sam Edney (White Tiger) vs Marc Serafino (Sityodtong)
This was fight of the night, 5 rounds where the guys didn't give an inch and fought cleanly with technique and power. The young gun Sam looking in trouble some times but giving the 40 year old Marc a small cut above the eye, probably from a head kick which he tried many times. Sam eventually winning the fight SPD but it was close the whole time.

F8 - 83kg MMA
Alan Webb vs Chris Bradford (Black Panthers)
A bloodied Alan won SPD.

F9 - 65kg WMC Vic Title
Ashley Powell (Hangar 4) vs Phillip Lai (Sor.Jaiphet)
Ashley put the pressure on early, making it plain to see for everyone there that he was hungry for that belt and was going to put on a good show for his trainer, also the promoter. He listened to instructions well, used his timing well, and most importantly, made Phil fight a different fight to the one a lot of us saw in Shepparton recently for another title. Phil did not get to use his effective round kicks, instead suffering a lot of damage in the 3R from alternating knees and elbows, the second flurry getting stopped by the ref Ignatious. Ashley new WMC Vic champion.

F10 - 57kg WMC Vic Title
Tom Murray (Sor.Naksoo) vs Ahmed Hussein (Don Millar)
This fight was a great main event, it had many twists & turns. Tom fired up many times to give Ahmed a taste of main event status, but to his credit the vastly-improved Ahmed was there for the distance and had some good combos and techniques of his own. Tom has had twice as many fights as Ahmed but probably weighed about 5kg lighter at fight time but expereince prevailed and Tommy went on to win UPD and also got to wear a brand new WMC title belt.

Ben's corner before the fight

Ben ‘Bad Intentions’ Ackroyd fought Zhuwei Gow from Sityodtong Gym for the Thai Cultural Festival in Melbourne’s Federation Square.

This was Ben’s first fight in twelve months, after having three or four different opponents pull out of previous match-ups. Ben put in a huge performance and won by unanimous points decision, and showed a great array of MuayThai skills. Ben was also awarded Fighter of the Day.

Great job Ben! We look forward to seeing you back in the ring soon.

FORMER UFC AND PRIDE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION MINOTAURO NOGUEIRA - 27th FEB, 2010

Allan gets Ben in a double arm barBig Nog and Allan GoesBig Nog shows Andreas and Ash some MMA moves

Hangar 4 was lucky enough to be the only Victorian gym to host Antônio Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira with his coach and BJJ 6th degree black belt Allan Goes.

After a typical Brazilian late start, Nogueira and Goes started the seminar in full gi to show their respect to the art of BJJ. After a quick change clothes, the first half of the seminar was MMA based, with students working wrestling, striking and controlling moves against the cage.

The second half of the seminar was strictly BJJ, with both Big Nog and Goes showing the Hangar students some serious submissions.

After 2 ½ hours, both Nogueria and Goes spoke to the students about their love and respect for the Gracie heritage and the BJJ lifestyle. After their impassioned speeches, both guys posed for photos and signed autographs, taking each and every request.

The afternoon seminar had the added bonus of the students having the opportunity to roll with both Big Nog and Goes. It was a great day for everyone that attended.

Special thanks go out to Big Nog’s manager Jorge Guimaraes (who also manages Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Jose Aldo and many more top Brazilian fighters) and Zebra Mats’ Pat Rottura, who both made this great day possible.

HANGAR 4 - LATEST FIGHT RESULTS

Ultimate Promotions’ Rumble in the Jungle 16 – Hoppers Crossing, 26th Feb, 2010

Hangar 4’s Phil Arsoski vs Junior Uy (Full Force Gym)

After two fights with two knockouts, Phil was walking into his toughest fight yet up against Junior Uy from Reinhart Badato’s Full Force Gym in Sydney. The first round started off as planned with Phil being the aggressor, catching Junior with lots of body kicks and hand combinations. Phil easily won the round.

The second round was a complete 180 turn, with Junior dominating the entire round including the grappling.

With Phil’s cardio running out in the third and final round, knowing Phil’s heavy hands the instruction was simple – to try and put a right hand on Junior Uy’s chin. With just 30 seconds remaining in the round, and Junior definitely on top, Phil landed the punch we’d been waiting for, giving Junior a standing eight count to successfully get the round and the fight.

Matt Reid’s K.O. 7 – Shepparton Basketball Stadium, 27th Feb, 2010

David Lawton vs Daniel Ellis (Cobram MuayThai)

With David being sick leading up to this fight he had little chance to prepare. However, we knew with David’s high work-rate and strong cardio he would take on the challenge head-on.

Round one: Daniel came out very strong, attacking David’s front leg and putting him onto the canvas early. This did not seem to bother the tough boy from Cork as he stuck to his game plan and worked the head and body with a flurry of hand combinations. A very hard round to pick, this could have gone either way.

Round two: this was definitely David’s best round of the fight, almost giving Daniel a standing eight count.

Round three: the final round was an absolute war; the crowd was on its feet cheering for both boys. With David throwing hands at 100 miles-an-hour, and Daniel landing several head kicks, it was definitely the round of the night. A great effort from both boys, the judges could not separate them and gave it a draw.

Congratulations to them both for putting on such a tough display of MuayThai.

THE HANGAR 4 GIRLS – DOING US PROUD IN THAILAND

Nadine in push-up action

With both of Hangar 4’s female fighters spending time in Thailand, it’s time to have an update on their progress.

First up, Nadine Allshorn (left). Nadine upped moved to Thailand to live and train at the WMC Camp in Lamai just before Xmas 2009. Nadine has had one fight since her move, which she won convincingly by stopping the girl in the first round. Nadine has another fight planned for the 22nd March and, with her training twice a day with legends such as Nokweed Davy and the other Thai coaches at the WMC Camp, her passion and work ethic are sure to pay off.

Sylvia in Thailand

Sylvia Schiavoni (right) left for Thailand in early 2010 and spent the first part of her trip training at the world famous Master Toddy’s Ultra Fight Gym in Bangkok. After a few false starts and a stadium being flooded, Sylvia was ready for her first fight. Many smaller shows in Thailand are held in Buddhist temples and include music, dancing and side-shows for entertainment. This is where Sylvia found herself for her first fight, in Udon Thani. Sylvia had to drop weight for the match up… which must have made her very angry as she stopped the girl in the first round.

After winning her fight easily, Sylvia relocated to the WMC Camp in Lamai to train alongside Nadine and prepare for her second fight on the 2nd March. After struggling with an ear infection, Sylvia still managed to win the four-round contest by unanimous decision. Next up for Sylvia is an appearance for Primal Promotions’ ‘Warrior’s Way 1’ on the 28th March.

ULTIMATE PROMOTIONS PRESENTS: RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE 15 - 27th Nov, 2009

Hangar 4 had three boys representing the gym on the night; two first-timers, David “the Nightmare” Lawton and Phil “the Professor” Arsoski, and Michael O'Sullivan, who were all competing for the first time under the Hangar 4 banner.

The first fight saw Dave face-off with Troy Resic of Black Panther MMA in Geelong. The first round started out at an extremely hectic pace with Troy controlling the grapple and dumping Dave quite a few times in the early minutes. Troy won the first round convincingly, so Dave decided to up the ante and live up to his namesake - he turned into “the Nightmare”, and dominated Troy with a barrage of punches and kicks throughout the second round.

Dave 'the Nightmare' Lawton

The boys went into the third round with the scores even, and David – under strict instructions from his corner – kept up the pressure for the following two minutes. Dave followed the instructions perfectly and got a TKO with just a few seconds of the round remaining. A massive achievement for a first fight. Our boy from Cork, Ireland, was over the moon.

Phil 'the Professor' Arsoski

Next up was Phil Arsoski against Patrick Scurry from Martial Mix. The fight proved extremely close throughout, and Phil got a very lucky eight-count in the second round. Phil picked up the pace in the third and final round, going for head-kicks and big right hands. Phil won convincingly on all three judges’ scorecards. That made two-for-two for the Hangar.

Moz

Going into the third fight, Michael O’ Sullivan (Moz) was up against an extremely experienced fighter named Marc Gelsi from Powerplay Gym. Though this was only Marc’s third fight, Marc has trained for well over ten years. The fight started out at a ferocious pace with both boys throwing big bombs. Unluckily for Moz, he was struck with a knee to the groin which threw him off track. Marc, seeing his opportunity, powered through with some big punches and knocked Moz out before the first round bell.

Well done to all three for giving it their all, and thanks to everyone who came down on the night to show their support.

FIGHTFORCE PROMOTIONS - CHELSEA HEIGHTS HOTEL – 22nd NOV, 2009

Lindsay Sheehan, coming off two straight MMA wins, was up against newcomer Vic Grujic from the tough Kimekai MMA gym. Lindsay took the fight at short notice and had to cut quite a few kilos to make weight, which unfortunately took its toll on his cardio. Vic proved to be a very strong wrestler, negating Lindsay’s stand-up game, and Vic wore Lindsay down to win the fight by a unanimous points decision.

Lindsay will be back fighting in 2010 and hopes to take his game to the next level.

CAGE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS (CFC) 11 - LUNA PARK, SYDNEY - 20th NOV, 2009

Ash walking out at CFC 11

Ashley Powell stepped up to Australia’s premier MMA promotion, CFC. Fighting at his new MMA fight weight of 65kgs, Ash was up against Sydney’s Gracie-Barra BJJ purple belt BJJ Hugh Cameron.

This was a huge test for Ash as Hugh had greater MMA experience with more fights at this level. After seeing footage of a few of Hugh’s previous fights, the game-plan was to keep the fight at a distance and to not get caught-up in a wrestling match. Unfortunately this did not eventuate as Hugh closed the gap in every encounter to get the take-down, and then proceeded to lay dormant for the remainder of each round.

Ash at CFC 11Ash worked off his back for the entire fight; he dropped elbows onto Hugh’s head and pleaded for the ref to stand them up, but Hugh gritted it out for a non-decisive win.

Well done to Ash for stepping up to the CFC, for whom he’ll be fighting again in March 2010.

ULTIMATE GLORY - KEILOR BASKETBALL STADIUM - 1st NOV, 2009

Hangar 4’s Ash Powell faced a big task on Sunday night with the possibility of fighting twice in the same night at the fight weight of 65kgs. It was the first time that Ash was to fight at this weight, and with a great diet plan and intense training program Ash made the weight with ease.

Ash’s first fight of the night was against Erik Miskell of Young Bulls Gym in Dandenong. Its trainer, Laos Tui, always has his guys in great shape. Erik put in a strong effort, but with Ash controlling the grapple with his strength and height advantage, everything went to plan and Ash won a majority points decision on all 3 score cards.

The second fight of the night was against Allan Gocs from Martial Mix, a gym known for its conditioning and with Allan fresh and Ash already having had one fight that evening, it was going to be tough.

This second fight was very much a carbon copy of the first. With Ash being the taller fighter, once Allan came inside Ash’s grapple he was just too strong and Ash let a flurry of knees and elbows go in every exchange. The fight went very much to plan, and with Ash having cut Allan in the last round, Ash put an exclamation mark on the fight and walked away with a $1000 cash prize put into his shorts by promoter Jonny Scida.

Next up for Ash is an MMA fight in Sydney on CFC (Cage Fighting Championship) on the 20th November. The Hangar will also be represented by Lindsay Sheehan fighting at his new fight weight of 84kg. With both of the these boys up in Sydney on the Friday night, followed by Nadine Allshorn, Michael O’Sullivan and Ben Ackroyd fighting on the Sunday at Chelsea Heights, it promises to be a big weekend for the Hangar 4 coaching and support staff.

After these shows, we have David ‘the Nightmare’ Lawton and Phil Arsoski fighting on the final Ultimate show of the year on 27th November at Hoppers Crossing.
